The in and outs of color.
I’m Hailee, the girl behind Nails by Hailee, and I’m so excited to share a bit about color theory and the color wheel with you. Understanding these basics has truly elevated my nail designs, and I hope it inspires your own creations too!
The color wheel is an essential tool for artists—it’s a circular diagram that organizes colors and shows how they relate to one another.

color
Color comes in many shades but only three forms; primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

01
Primary colors: Red, yellow, and blue—the foundation of all other colors.
02
Secondary colors: Created by mixing primaries (orange = red + yellow; green = yellow + blue; purple = blue + red).
03
Tertiary colors: Mixtures of a primary and a secondary (such as red-orange or blue-green).
04
The real magic happens in color harmonies—thoughtful combinations that create balanced, beautiful looks on your nails.

Monochromatic:
Triadic:
01
Complementary: Colors opposite on the wheel (e.g., blue + orange). They create high contrast and make each other pop—ideal for bold accent nails.
02
Analogous: Colors next to each other (e.g., blue, blue-green, green). These blend smoothly for harmonious, serene designs like gradients.
03
Monochromatic: Variations of a single color (light to dark shades). Elegant and foolproof for sophisticated looks.
04
Triadic: Three evenly spaced colors (e.g., red, yellow, blue). Vibrant yet balanced—great for playful, multicolored manis.
Warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) bring energy and warmth, while cool colors (blues, greens, purples) feel calm and refreshing.
